If Prince William ever takes the throne as King of England, his wife-to-be, Kate Middleton, will become his Queen Consort, or Queen of England through marriage.

Thoroughly intrigued with the mysterious process (and the fairytale romance) of becoming Queen,  we decided to make a list of our Top Ten Favorite Songs About Queens. Some are applicable in royal terms, while others are just about being a strong, powerful femme fatale.

Either way, gorgeous Kate Middleton has both bases covered.

10. “The Queen & The Soldier”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Suzanne Vega[/lastfm]

Although the British monarchy isn’t the same as it used to be, The Queen has a lot of pressures to deal with, being especially assigned with the heavy task of compassionately and diplomatically dealing with the issues of the “common people.”

Kate Middleton seems like she has a logical, understanding head on her shoulders, but that still won’t keep her from having to deal with wayward, unhappy “soldiers,” like in the lyrics of this Suzanne Vega song:

The Queen knew she’d seen his face some place before/and slowly she let him inside/he said I’ve watched your palace from up on the hill and I wonder who is the woman for whom we all kill

9.  “Dancehall Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Robyn[/lastfm]

In Robyn’s song “Dancehall Queen,” she might not be actual royalty, but she is the unquestioned leader of the dancefloor. Still very young, we have no doubt that, in a way, Middleton will be her own “dancehall queen,” occasionally shouting out:

You know I still run this thing/like a dancehall queen/…I got them hypnotized/I get another shout out on the mic

8. “Queen of Hearts”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jason Derulo[/lastfm]

Kate Middleton is not only the soon-to-be wife of Prince William; she’s the soon-to-be wife of an entire country. In fact, she will probably be the “Queen of Hearts”of many of the British citizens, but we have to remember that it was Prince William who first said:

So, I’m throwing out all my cards/because I think I found the Queen of Hearts.

7. “Sign Of The Gypsy Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]April Wine[/lastfm]

In April Wine’s song “Sign of The Gypsy Queen,” is all about the signs of trouble that the “gypsy” queen portends. We hope that there aren’t any troubles with Middleton is Queen and that England doesn’t have to heed the “Sign of the gypsy queen/Pack your things and leave/Word of a woman who knows/Take all your gold and you go.”

6. “Little Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Heart[/lastfm]

As a Princess (and as the future Queen), Kate Middleton will be in the media a lot; it will be the rare person who actually knows the real Middleton. Heart’s lyrics to “Little Queen” are quite apropos to all the impersonal media attention Middleton will be getting:

Hot on the presses today – little queen/Making your passion play – little queen/Nobody knows your melancholy mind -Little queen

5.  “Kings & Queens”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Aerosmith[/lastfm]

Thankfully, there isn’t a lot of mindless beheading going on these days in England and Middleton will not have to reenact the lyrics to this obscure Aerosmith song:

Long ago in days untold/Were ruled by lords of greed/Maidens fair, with gold they dared/To bare their wombs that bleed/Kings And Queens and guillotines/Taking lives denied/Starch and parchments laid the laws/When bishops took the ride

4. “Dancing Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Abba[/lastfm]

Sort of like the ’70s version of fellow Swede Robyn’s “Dancehall Queen,” Abba’s “Dancing Queen” tells a story about a girl that is queen of the dancefloor, the girl you just can’t keep your eyes off of:

You can dance, you can jive/Having the time of your life/Ooh see that girl, watch that scene/Digging  the dancing queen

Just like Kate Middleton.

3. “Venice Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm]

A melancholy-ish song (there is certainly more to the story than meets the ear) that we wouldn’t normally expect from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they tell the story of a girl who becomes the “Venice Queen.

We all want to tell her /Tell her that we love her/Venice gets a queen/Best I’ve ever seen/We all want to kiss her/Tell her that we miss her/Venice gets a queen

We’re sure there a lot of people out there that want to tell Kate Middleton how much they “love her.” Creepy.

2. “Killer Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Queen[/lastfm]

It is completely unlikely that Kate Middleton is as high-maitenence as the “queen” in Queen’s song, “Killer Queen,” but we’ve always wanted to be the woman “dynamite with a laser beam” that Freddie Mercury sings about, who “keeps Moet et Chandon/in her pretty cabinet/’Let them eat cake’ she says/Just like Mary Antoinette/A built-in remedy/For Kruschev and Kennedy/At anytime an invitation/You can’t decline.”

1. “God Save The Queen”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Sex Pistols[/lastfm]

And, of course, our number one song about being the Queen of England is the Sex Pistols’ “God Save The Queen.” Except we think Kate Middleton will be portrayed as a human being and England will have a future.

England’s “figurehead” will be exactly what she seems–a pretty, prim young woman to charm the masses.
